Auto repair in the United States is split between independent shops, dealership service departments and national chains. Independents handle most routine work (oil changes, brakes, tune-ups, check-engine diagnostics) at lower labor rates and often specialize in one make or in imports; dealers keep factory tools, software and warranty authority; chains sell speed and standard pricing on maintenance items. Most shops charge a diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and quote parts and labor separately. Certification matters: look for ASE-certified technicians and, in many states, a state repair license posted at the counter. Written estimates are required by law in most states before work begins, and you are entitled to your old parts if you ask.

Berkeley is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around Berkeley is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

I've known Magnus for over 10 years, and when he planned to start his own machine shop it was an easy mental bookmark to place when my own engine would need a refresh. After pushing my S13 SR20DET a bit harder than it could take I contacted Magnus for guidance. Working with him through the rebuild was a collaborative experience. I was afforded the opportunity to learn the details that call for attention with his direction. The satisfaction of the engine starting up on the first crank, sounding healthier than I have ever heard it, led me to recognize that not only am I supporting a friend's business, but the support is warranted by good work and service. In his machining and assembly, he supports his customers with high quality work and resources of knowledge. I can confidently say that I recommend his business, not because I know and care about the guy, but because his work is sound and valuable. Plus, the hoodie colors are sick!

I extensively worked with Magnus to build my EA888.3 for my mk7 golf r. Aside from specializing in bmws he is also extremely knowledgeable on these engines and many others. We settled on porting and building my head with a supertech valve train and building my block with a mix of mahle and supertech forged internals. From start to finish Magnus went above and beyond to make the engine exactly what I wanted within the budget I had. You wonβt find this level of professionalism, communication, or quality of work anywhere else. If you want your engine done at the highest level with consistent communication and fast turn around you canβt beat flying colors.

Brought Magnus an m20 to finally get my e30 back on the road and let me say Iβm beyond impressed. The turn around time on a full rebuild was excellent, and the machine work was even better! I asked him for a little extra performance without sacrificing any reliability and he did a beautiful 5 angle valve job, unshrouded the valves, and removed casting lines from the ports. Itβs hard to find knowledgeable people with this kind of attention to detail these days. If youβve got the money to spend on some top-notch machinework, then Magnus is your guy. Thanks again man for helping me get my baby back on the road!

Magnus was extremely helpful and professional throughout the machining process of tackling my S52 block w/JE pistons. He updated me every week and presented a realistic timeline that he was able to follow through with. This is very rare these days with machine work services. Most places will push customers off for months. Not only that, but he was also able to provide a vast amount of tips and expertise about engines in general, proving as an invaluable source of information. I couldnβt have asked for more as a customer and as an enthusiast.

I had some machine work done on my S54 cylinder head, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Magnus handled the job, which included replacing the valves/springs, machining the head, and performing a 4-angle valve job. From the start, Magnus was excellent. He answered all my questions and took the time to explain every part of the process in detail. His communication was clear and consistent, and he kept me updated throughout the teardown and inspection of all the components. Even after I received the completed head, Magnus continued to be incredibly helpful. Anytime I had questions during the reassembly of my engine, he was more than willing to assist. The turnaround time was exactly as promised, and the quality of the work was top-notch. I highly recommend Magnus and his shop to anyone looking for professional, knowledgeable, and reliable machine work.
